Waste management
Sustainable consumption is the most efficient way to manage waste. At METRO, we strive to organize our sourcing, transportation and storage of goods the way they stay fresh for as long as possible and as many goods as possible reach the customer.
The company is constantly developing its operational processes, which allows better forecasting of the procurement processes and distribution of goods between stores.
Reducing household waste is especially important today
- According to the Accounts Chamber, about 65 million tons of municipal solid waste were generated in Russia in 2019. And this figure will grow by 1-2% annually.
- Ecologists underline that 100% of waste needs to be sorted by 2030.
- If nothing changes, then by 2050 Russians will be throwing out about 100 million tons of garbage annually, and existing landfills will not be able to cope with this amount.
- Considering this the next goal of METRO is to work on the development of residual waste recycling: goods packaging, polyethylene and damaged food products.
